Drew Jurecka composed original music for the The Burning Bush. We asked Drew to answer a few questions about his and fellow musician Rebekah Wolkstein's participation in the current production.

What drew you to this project?
"My Wife Rebekah saw the show at a fringe festival and enjoyed it so much that she dragged me out to see it with her the second time she went.  We both became fans of Tracey's at that point."

What are some unique aspects about working on this show?
"The Jewish musical angle is nice, as it gives me a chance to write in a sort of "Klezmer and beyond" genre.  I also immediately wanted to run with the Madonna thing, and do some Yiddish-sounding arrangements of some of her better known music."

What excites you about this show?
"I always get excited about being able to write and perform music with a play.  It's a nice departure from working solely with other musicians, and it provides an entirely different set of challenges as a composer.

What is the most important thing when designing music for an new theatrical production?
"Serving the text is always the most important thing when writing music for a play.  You have to heighten the emotion that you're underscoring without overdoing it.  You have to walk a fine line between writing interesting and engaging music and detracting attention away from the important action on stage."
